The Malawi electronic visa system, a convenient initiative by the Malawi Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, was launched in 2019. The Malawi e-Visa is an official document that grants entry into the country. Travelers intending to visit Malawi can apply for the visa through an online portal, where they will need to provide the necessary details and complete an online payment.

Applicants who submit visa applications through the e-visa system will receive confirmation via email. Following necessary processing, the decision on the application's approval will be sent to the registered email address. This approval letter must be presented at the passport control counter upon entry into Malawi for verification. 

It's important to note that Malawian officials at ports of entry retain the right to deny entry to holders of e-Visas without explanation based on inspection and verification.

Currently, citizens of 167 countries worldwide are eligible for Malawi e-visas. That means they can obtain a Malawi visa online for either tourist purposes or transit through this country. There are two categories of Malawi e-visa available: 

• Tourist e-visa: Required for those planning to visit Malawi for tourism.
• Transit e-visa: Allows travelers to pass through Malawi for a short period while en route to another destination.
