How often does Pakistan flood?

Flooding in Pakistan is a significant and recurring issue, primarily driven by the monsoon season, which occurs from July to August.

During this period, the country typically receives about 255 mm of rain monthly, but recent years have seen extreme deviations. For instance, in 2022, some regions experienced over 726% more rainfall than average, leading to catastrophic floods that affected approximately 33 million people and resulted in over 1,700 deaths.

Major flood events have occurred almost every decade since Pakistan's independence in 1947, with notable disasters in 2010, 2011, and 2022, each causing extensive damage to infrastructure, and agriculture, and displacing millions. The frequency and intensity of these floods have increased due to climate change, which has led to glacial melting and more extreme weather patterns.

As a result, flood management has become a critical challenge for the country, necessitating improved disaster preparedness and response strategies to mitigate the impact on vulnerable communities.
